Current Concepts Lectures
What we now know as the Current Concepts Lectures came from a suggestion by John Edwards in 1976 to run what was termed "Mini Conferences" around Australia.
At the time, John was SA/NT Branch representative to Council. In 1977 John and Renze Bais, both from the IMVS in Adelaide, presented "Enzymes in Clinical Biochemistry". The original concept of this series was for two speakers to visit the Branches and, supplemented by local input, provide a one day conference.
These meetings have continued up until the present time, although changing somewhat in 2001 with the speakers' presentations being broadcast through the Internet with MISER (Multicast Internet Streaming Education Resource). A return to the "travelling circus" concept was made in 2006 when Tony Barker and Graham Jones spread the word on "Common Reference Intervals". 2007 saw John Whitfield and Chris Florkowski doing a very successful hybrid when they pre-recorded their "EBLM " lectures at RMIT onto DVD allowing them to do combinations of live and virtual presentations in each State and NZ. Some venues provided additional local speakers. A similar process was followed in 2008 when three speakers; Ken Worth, Don Mikkelsen & Russell Menere did "Lean 6 Sigma".
