Biography
Dr. Sæmundur Rögnvaldsson is a physician and post-doctoral researcher at the University of Iceland and Landspítali – The National University Hospital of Iceland. In 2022, he defended his thesis on the clinical implications of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and the methodological issues that come up when studying asymptomatic disorders like MGUS. As a member of the core team, Sæmundur has been deeply involved in the design and implementation of the iStopMM screening study with the aim of determining the potential benefits and harms of MGUS screening. Sæmundur is passionate about bringing methodological rigour to MGUS and plasma cell disorder research in order to improve the care of patients.

Screening in multiple myeloma and its precursors
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy that often presents with severe end organ damage diagnosis that limits the application of effective therapies and leads to early mortality. However, MM develops over years or decades from its precursors, monoclonal gammopathy of undeteremined significance (MGUS) and smoldering MM (SMM). These asymptomatic precursors can easily be detected in blood and recent studies have shown that limited duration, early treatment in high-risk SMM can prevent MM and prolong survival. However, only ~5% of those with MM had previously been diagnosed with a precursor condition and early treatment is therefore not available to a vast majority of MM patients. Population-based screening could provide a solution and lead to a paradigm shift in MM care from late to early diagnosis and lead to the prevention of MM. In his presentation Dr. Rögnvaldsson will discuss the pros, cons, and current state of MM screening.
